SAVVY TRAVELER TIPS

Vacation Like a Local

Hike near Telluride CO

Get Outside

  • Being friendly and saying ‘Hi” to people you meet on the trail.

  • Knowing that uphill hikers have the right of way as do horses when you meet on the trail.

  • Bringing water. You are 9000 feet above sea level (and climbing). Hydrate.

  • Having a leash for your dog and picking up your dog’s waste.

  • Stopping to breathe. Take a break and look up and look around – it’s pretty special here.

  • Littering – if you pack it in; please pack it out.
  • “Bushwhacking” your own path – please stay on the trails.
  • Losing control coming downhill (skiing, biking, hiking). This is dangerous to others.

Be a Townie

  • Being kind and patient. Staffing can be tough in small towns.
  • Tipping generously for good service.
  • Supporting the locally owned businesses.
  • Walking or riding a bike (or use dial a ride) – the town is small, the air is clean, we don’t have Uber – please walk to dinner.
  • Speeding. Slow it down and watch for pedestrians, bikers, etc.
  • Walking in the middle of the street – this is a magical place, but it is not Main Street Disneyland. Be aware of your surroundings.

Be Neighborly

  • Saying Hi to your neighbor and respect that they may live here full time.
  • Exploring a new store, restaurant, or bar
  • Attending a local event – i.e. Ah Haa Art
  • Partying until dawn and creating noise that disturbs neighbors.
  • Leaving your trash cans lids unlocked. The bears and the birds will make a mess.

Care for the Environment

  • Turning off your lights when you leave your rental property
  • Recycling
  • Walking instead of driving – use the FREE gondola
  • Bringing grocery bags.
  • Leaving your fireplace running all day.
  • Buying bottled water. Telluride/MV is great – straight from the source. Bring a reusable container instead.
  • Leaving your car idling to warm up – it will warm up soon enough.
  • Feeding Wildlife. This can endanger them by encouraging interaction with people.
