As the summer crowds begin to thin just a bit, there's a calmness that settles over town—making it feel like your own private mountain hideaway. Whether you’re here to hike, savor a festival, or simply relax with a glass of wine on a patio, August delivers that sweet spot between summer buzz and fall serenity.

At Curate Telluride, we help guests design intentional stays rooted in beauty, comfort, and local insight. This is our go-to guide for everything you need to know about visiting Telluride in August—what to do, where to eat, how to pack, and how to stay like a local.

Telluride Weather in August: Sunshine and Crisp Mountain Nights

August weather in Telluride is about as ideal as it gets. Daytime highs typically reach the mid-70s to low 80s°F, while nights cool down into the 40s or 50s. It’s not unusual to start your day in a tank top and end it wrapped in a fleece under the stars.

One important note: afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially early in the month. They often roll in suddenly and clear out quickly, so we recommend getting outside early and being flexible with afternoon plans. Always check the forecast before heading above the treeline, and carry a lightweight rain jacket just in case.

What to Pack for a Summer Stay in Telluride

Packing for Telluride is all about layering and versatility. The altitude, variable weather, and mix of adventure and leisure mean you’ll want to be prepared for just about everything.

Bring breathable hiking clothes, a midweight fleece or puffer jacket, and a rain shell you can stuff in a daypack. Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners are a must—even easy trails here tend to have rocky sections.

Sun protection is key: the UV intensity is stronger at high elevations, so don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 30+), and a wide-brim hat. A refillable water bottle or hydration pack is essential, especially for longer hikes.

You might also want something a little nicer for dinner—Telluride is casual, but many of its best restaurants offer a fun chance to dress up. Don’t overpack though: all Curate Telluride homes include washers, dryers, and fully equipped kitchens.

Events & Festivals in Telluride This August

August is packed with vibrant events that showcase the town’s love of music, film, food, and the outdoors. These are a few of the highlights for 2025:

Crowd at Telluride Jazz Festival

Telluride Jazz Festival (August 8–10, 2025)

Set in scenic Town Park, this beloved festival blends world-class jazz with an intimate, laid-back mountain atmosphere. Bring a blanket, sip something local, and let the music wash over you beneath the peaks.

Telluride Mushroom Festival (August 13–17, 2025)

A celebration of all things fungi, this festival brings together foragers, scientists, chefs, and curious foodies. Expect guided hikes, tastings, workshops, and one of the most whimsical parades you’ll ever see.

Telluride Film Festival (August 29–September 1, 2025)

One of the most prestigious film festivals in the country—and also one of the most low-key. Stars and cinephiles mingle casually in coffee shops and theaters across town for a weekend of premieres and buzz-worthy screenings.

Friday Farmers Market (Every Friday on South Oak Street)

Shop fresh produce, wildflowers, handmade goods, and baked treats while soaking in the mountain views. It's the perfect pre-hike or post-lunch stop.

Best August Hikes in Telluride

August is high alpine hiking season. Trails are (mostly) snow-free, wildflowers are still blooming, and the weather is prime for long days outdoors. Whether you’re looking for a quick loop or a full-day adventure, there’s something for every skill level.

Bear Creek Falls

This family-friendly favorite starts at the south end of town and winds gently through pine and aspen forest to a roaring waterfall. It’s around 5 miles round trip and a perfect intro to Telluride’s trail system.

Jud Wiebe Trail

For a shorter hike with huge payoff, this 3-mile loop climbs above town and offers sweeping views of the box canyon. Early morning or golden hour is best for light and cooler temps.

Blue Lake via Bridal Veil Basin

A challenging but unforgettable trek into the high alpine, this 6-mile out-and-back brings you to an electric-blue lake surrounded by jagged peaks. Access starts near Bridal Veil Falls—bring plenty of water and a camera.

Sneffels Highline Trail

For experienced hikers, this 12-mile loop is a bucket-list experience. Meadows, basins, old-growth forest, and 360° mountain views await. Start early and be prepared for altitude.

If hiking isn't your thing, Telluride also offers e-bike rentals, fly fishing, climbing, and scenic drives through old mining country.
